Sustainable Water & Livestock Development Initiative for Tribal Communities

BHUVI, a newly established NGO, is addressing the acute water shortage and livelihood challenges in tribal villages of Karamadai & Periyanaickenpalayam blocks, Coimbatore district by implementing water security and livestock-based income generation activities. Due to limited water availability, lack of fodder, and poor access to sustainable animal husbandry practices, tribal families struggle to maintain their livestock, impacting their income and food security. This initiative focuses on constructing water tanks for livestock, promoting stall feeding, and supporting dairy, goat, and poultry farming to ensure economic stability and resilience. Key Issues: • Water Scarcity for Livestock: Lack of dedicated water tanks and drinking facilities leads to poor animal health and reduced productivity. • Unorganized Livestock Management: Traditional free grazing is unsustainable, while proper stall feeding is not widely practiced. • Limited Income Opportunities: Absence of structured dairy, goat, and poultry farming restricts economic growth. Proposed Interventions: Construction of Water Tanks for Livestock – Establishing community-based water storage to ensure a reliable water source for animals. Stall-Feeding & Fodder Development – Training farmers in nutrient-rich fodder cultivation and stall-feeding techniques to improve livestock health. Dairy Farming Support – Providing high-yield milch animals, veterinary care, and milk collection centers for better market access. Goat Farming for Livelihoods – Promoting sustainable goat rearing with improved breeds and proper feed management. Poultry Farming Development – Establishing small-scale poultry units to generate quick and steady income for tribal families. Dairy & Livestock-Based Microenterprises – Supporting milk processing, organic dairy products, and tribal-owned dairy cooperatives.
