How is Charity Perceived?

Often, charity is perceived as merely providing financial support to those in need, but this is a limited view. The term “charity” originates from the Latin word caritas, which means love. Thus, charity encompasses much more than financial aid; it includes offering care, support, and affection to those in need. You don’t have to be wealthy to contribute meaningfully. Everyone can help others in their way, making a positive impact in their lives.

For example, spending time with children in orphanages or visiting elderly people in care homes can bring immense joy to them. However, it is crucial to balance this with responsibilities at home. Ignoring one’s parents while spending time with others in need is not truly commendable. True charity involves first ensuring the well-being of our family members and then reaching out to help others. By doing so, we not only fulfil our family duties but also extend genuine compassion to the wider community.

How Can You Contribute?

The deserving group could be :

  1. Rag pickers – They have chosen to lead their life by picking plastics, iron pieces, cardboard etc., and sell the same and make a living. It is a tough job and the amount they get is very paltry. I donate to these people and also give them gloves, cap, mask, old shoes, old clothes and they gladly receive the same and use it as well.
  2. Prefer to buy vegetables and fruits from roadside small vendors. Even though the price is high, I get the satisfaction of having helped a self employed person.
  3. Construction laborers – They face a tough life with no social security cover and have to survive on daily wage. These people gladly accept help and one can donate old clothes, old vessels, shoes, raw rice that they cook and eat without wasting. (I prefer giving raw rice than cooked food because they have to eat it before it gets stale whereas raw rice can be used according to their need).
  4. Small time Orphanages near my residence that are run purely on the help of nearby residents. They house 20–30 children, provide food, shelter and the children go to Government school.
  5. Old age homes run for abandoned senior citizens without any charges. One can spend some time with these unfortunate abandoned senior citizens and share whatever one wants.
