Rahat Shakti Abhiyan: A Grassroots Initiative for Women’s Health and Dignity in Rural Madhya Pradesh By Rahat Samarpan Seva Samiti, Vijayraghavgarh, Katni (M.P.) In the remote rural areas of Vijayraghavgarh block in Katni district, Madhya Pradesh, Rahat Samarpan Seva Samiti has launched an inspiring and much-needed campaign – Rahat Shakti Abhiyan. This initiative is creating a significant impact by addressing the critical yet often neglected issue of menstrual hygiene and women’s dignity in villages. Menstruation remains a taboo subject in rural India. Lack of information, social stigma, and unavailability of proper resources often result in unhygienic practices, causing severe health problems among women. Recognizing this, Rahat Shakti Abhiyan was initiated with the aim to break the silence, create awareness, and support women with knowledge, dignity, and necessary hygiene products. The campaign began from Gram Panchayat Amahta and has now successfully reached more than 18 Gram Panchayats of Vijayraghavgarh block. Each camp under this campaign is carefully designed to educate women and adolescent girls about menstruation, hygiene practices, and their rights over their own health and bodies. Key components of the campaign include awareness sessions, interactive discussions, and free distribution of sanitary pads. More than 1500 women and girls have already benefitted from these camps. What makes the campaign unique is the community involvement – every session witnesses the active participation of ASHA workers, Anganwadi staff, women’s self-help groups, sarpanches, and youth volunteers. This strong local involvement has transformed this campaign from a small initiative into a grassroots movement. The campaign promotes slogans such as “Every Sister’s Strength – Every Village’s Growth” and “Stay Clean – Stay Healthy – Live with Dignity.” These messages are not just words, but calls to action that resonate deeply with rural women. In many villages, women have expressed that this is the first time someone has openly spoken to them about their health, heard their concerns, and guided them with care. What sets Rahat Shakti Abhiyan apart is its holistic and respectful approach. The sessions include scientific information delivered in a simple, relatable manner. Adolescent girls receive guidance through friendly counseling, while open discussions and group activities are used to eliminate shame and embarrassment around menstruation. Looking ahead, Rahat Samarpan Seva Samiti plans to establish permanent Women’s Awareness Centers in each Panchayat to provide ongoing support and resources. The mission is to turn this campaign into a sustainable rural movement for health, dignity, and empowerment.
