The business situation of gig economy in India has transformed lives of many individuals. Consequently, gig workers and other professionals such as delivery persons, freelancers and home-service workers, can opt for the flexible form of work rather than sticking to the rigid employer-employee arrangements. However, while gig work provides flexibility and other benefits, it has a number of drawbacks as well.

What Is Gig Work?
A gig worker is someone who is paid for their work through short-term, task-specific, freelance, or flexible gig jobs, instead of a full-time, traditional job. Platform workers are a significant subset of this group and are hired via digital platforms or apps.
According to NITI Aayog, India had 7.7 million gig workers in 2020-21, and it is expected to grow to 23.5 million by 2029-30. The estimates make it clear that gig work is growing to be a significant part of India’s employment.

Why is Everyone Opting for Gig Work?
One of the top benefits of gig work is flexibility. It can be helpful for students, people who need extra income and some workers who require flexible working hours.
Gig platforms are also generally low barrier jobs in many industries and allow workers to connect with customers in various locations. Gig work can potentially provide employment opportunities for a diverse workforce, such as women, youth, and persons with disabilities, says NITI Aayog.
But not everything that is flexible is necessarily stable. Pay may be based on assignment availability, hours worked, and incentives and expenses.
The Challenge of Income and Job Security
Working as gig workers might not mean as regular a paycheck. Costs for workers may also be incurred for travel, equipment, internet or other duties.
Fair work India’s research measures platform work, rather than just in terms of jobs, in aspects of fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation.
The ILO has also identified areas of potential concern regarding social protection, employment status, working conditions and adequate labour protection for gig and platform workers.

Social Security for Gig Workers in India
Social security is a major concern in the gig economy. Employers might have to protect workers from illness, workplace injuries, loss of income and other financial risks.
The Code on Social Security, 2020 recognizes gig and platform workers for the first time in India and sets out a framework to extend social security benefits to them. The Code has been implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on 21 Nov 2025 and will include provisions for gig and platform workers.
The ILO remains committed to raising awareness of the need to cover workers in India’s platform economy.

How can NGO support Gig workers?
To improve financial and social security, NGOs can help gig workers with:
- Digital and financial literacy
- Skills development and upskilling refer to the enhancement or acquisition of new skills.
- Labor rights and social security schemes knowledge.
- Ability to obtain financial services and insurance coverage
- The company provides legal and grievance support.
- The participation of women in flexible work.
- Local labour communities and supports.
Supporting gig work should be more than just facilitating the finding of gig work. The bigger picture is to ensure that gig work is dignifying, opportunity-rich, safer, and sustainable.
Building a More Secure Gig Economy
Gig work is expected to be a key component of India’s evolving labour market. While there are potential income opportunities to be gained from its flexibility and accessibility, sustainable livelihoods require more than an app or platform.
A more robust gig economy will require a combination of flexibility and fair pay, social security, safety, transparency, and worker protection. The issue for NGOs, policymakers, platforms, and worker organizations is to develop new ways of working that are inclusive and safe for workers.
