ITU was founded in Paris in 1865 because of the International Telegraph Union. It took its present name in 1932, and in 1947 became a specialized agency of the UN. Although its first area of experience was the telegraph, the work of ITU now covers the entire ICT sector, from digital broadcasting to the web, and from mobile technologies to 3D TV. a company of public-private partnership since its inception, ITU currently encompasses a membership of 193 countries and a few 700 private-sector entities. ITU is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has twelve regional and area offices around the world.
ITU has three Sectors: Radiocommunication (ITU-R); Telecommunication Standardization (ITU-T); and Telecommunication Development (ITU-D). Each Sector has its own unique characteristics and activities. Companies or organizations may become a member of one or more Sectors of ITU and may join as a Sector Member or Associate.
