About Us

DORD is a non-governmental organization founded in 1989 encompassing a few villages of Daudnagar Block of Aurangabad district by a band of 7 young persons imbibed with non-political, social, secular, and philanthropic fervour. It works to uplift society’s poor and marginalized sections, empowering women in urban and rural areas. It proposes diseases, patriarchal violence, malnutrition, poverty eradication, and exclusion to realize its vision of an empowered society. DORD is running several projects, including DORD Hospital, and schools, and offering free cataract surgeries for poor and elderly individuals. The reach of DORD hospital extends to the southern parts of Bihar, where there are no eye care services available. The hospital has performed over 50,000 surgeries in its ten years, with 79% being free of cost.

DORD aims to initiate, encourage, support and conduct research as well as action on the lives and living conditions of the rural poor. Thus, the organization works for well-being, health, education, sustainable development and equality, with the idea of mainstreaming the marginalized and deprived sections of children, women and older persons in the development process.

Key Milestones & Achievements

  • DORD, founded in 1989, marked its first major milestone in 1994 with the Ministry of Health’s MCH Care project. Over the years, it expanded its impact across 38 districts of Bihar through key programs in health, education, women’s empowerment, and child protection. Establishing the DORD Eye Hospital and multiple shelter homes further strengthened its role as a leading grassroots NGO.

  • Nodal NGO
  • In 2006, the Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART) named DORD as the Nodal NGO for the districts of Aurangabad and Arwal in Bihar.
  • Women Helpline and Short Stay Home
  • In 2009, the Bihar Government awarded DORD with the responsibility of running a Women Helpline and a Short Stay Home in Aurangabad.
  • Targeted Intervention Project
  • DORD implemented the Targeted Intervention Project in Rohtas District, supported by the Bihar State AIDS Control Society. The project involved working with around 300 Injecting Drug Users.
