Action for Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA) is an Odisha-based NGO dedicated to wildlife conservation, environmental protection, and community-based sustainable development. Established in 1999, it works to protect endangered species, restore mangroves, conserve coastal ecosystems, and promote animal welfare. APOWA also empowers local communities through awareness, disaster preparedness, and livelihood initiatives, ensuring that conservation efforts are aligned with human well-being.

Founded in 1999 and based in Odisha, APOWA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection of wildlife, conservation of biodiversity, and community empowerment. The NGO focuses on safeguarding endangered species, restoring mangrove ecosystems, protecting coastal habitats, and improving animal welfare. Alongside conservation, APOWA also works with vulnerable communities on climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and sustainable livelihoods, ensuring a balance between environmental protection and human development.

Milestones
Established in 1999 as a grassroots conservation initiative in Odisha. Initiated Mission Mangroves, one of the earliest community-driven mangrove restoration programmes in the state. Expanded work from wildlife rescue to integrated programmes covering disaster resilience, animal welfare, and marine conservation. Partnered with national and international NGOs to scale up biodiversity protection and sustainable livelihood projects.
Awards
Restored and protected thousands of hectares of mangroves along Odisha’s coastline. Supported coastal communities with disaster preparedness training, reaching thousands of people in cyclone-prone areas. Rescued and rehabilitated numerous injured and stranded wild animals and marine species. Provided sustained animal welfare services, including veterinary care for stray and domestic animals. Recognised by the Government of Odisha and international conservation networks for community-based mangrove restoration. Received appreciation from coastal development and disaster management authorities for pioneering climate resilience projects. Honoured by wildlife forums for contributions to sea turtle and coastal biodiversity conservation.
