The drive was spearheaded by Mandapet Circle Inspector Daram Suresh and Sub-Inspector G Chanti, who personally oversaw helmet checks at major intersections across town.
But instead of focusing on punitive action, the police turned the drive into a compassionate awareness program. Rather than collecting fines and letting the matter end there, the officers used a portion of the collected penalties to directly purchase helmets and hand them over to violators. This proactive method reinforced the value of safety over punishment.

CI Daram Suresh addressed the gathered public and two-wheeler riders, stating, “Wearing a helmet is not just a rule. It’s a shield for your life. It’s like Sri Rama Raksha for your family.” His statement emphasized the seriousness of road accidents and the importance of personal responsibility.
The Smiley Children Society extended its support by participating actively through volunteer mobilization. Youth volunteers were seen distributing flyers on helmet safety, engaging in one-on-one interactions with commuters, and helping raise awareness about traffic rules. According to Prudhvi Moses, founder of Smiley Children Society, “This is a step beyond enforcement. We want to create a mindset shift, especially among the youth, about respecting safety norms.”

Educational posters were displayed at every checkpoint, showing the alarming rate of road accidents in Andhra Pradesh. According to statistics, over 60% of motorcycle accident deaths are due to head injuries that could have been prevented with helmet use. The campaign created a visible impact. Several riders who initially expected a fine were pleasantly surprised to be given helmets instead. Many riders were also invited to sign a road safety pledge initiated by the Smiley Children Society, committing themselves to always wear a helmet and encourage others to do the same.

The Goal
As part of its ongoing outreach, the Smiley Children Society announced that it will extend this awareness initiative into local government schools.
